FAQs

A Notary Public is a state public officer appointed and commissioned by the Governor whose function is to: administer oaths, take acknowledgments of deeds and other instruments, attest to or certify photocopies of certain documents, and perform other duties specified by law.  Notaries are authorized by law to perform six basic duties:

  1. Administer oaths or affirmations
  2. Take acknowledgements
  3. Attest to photocopies of certain documents
  4. Solemnize marriages
  5. Verify vehicle identification numbers (VINs)
  6. Certify the contents of safe deposit boxes

Absolutely not. A Notary is forbidden from preparing legal documents or acting as a legal advisor unless he or she is also an attorney. Violators can be prosecuted for the unauthorized practice of law, so a Notary cannot answer your legal questions or provide advice about your particular document.

Please bring all of the documents that you need to be notarized (and all pages of each).

You must show a current government identification card (ID) that has been issued within the past five (5) years [per Civil Code Section 118(c)(3)&(4)]. The ID must have a photograph, description and signature of the person, and an identifying number.

Examples of appropriate IDs:

  • U.S. Passport
  • Foreign Passport

In the event that none of these forms of ID are available, two credible witnesses who fulfill all three of the following requirements must come with you.

  • Personally know the signer
  • Are not named in the document(s)
  • Do not have a financial interest in the document(s)

Both credible witnesses must have proper ID, as described above.

Yes, if the document has an original signature.  However, a fax or photocopied signature cannot be notarized.
